Google Play Store Now Shows App Sizes on the Home Screen to Indian Users

The Google Play Store has come as a long way since it launched back in 2012 as the overhaul to the Android Market. The app, now in its 8.x version, features a user-intuitive design which mostly follows Google's Material Design guidelines. Although there are still significant performance issues in terms of smoothness when using the Play Store on almost any Android device, Google has made progress in other areas. In terms of user-friendliness, Google has, over the past few years, made several changes to the UI to make it easier to discover and install apps. However, there was still plenty of room for improvement.

Now, the Play Store has started showing app sizes for all apps in the home screen of the Play Store. This is visible in the lower left corner of an app icon. That space was previously used for showing the user rating for an app. For now, this is only being shown to Indian users, and it is now visible on all of our devices.

App sizes are now shown on the Play Store home screen for Indian users

Why has Google made a change to the Play Store home screen for only Indian users? At this point in time, it is true that only Indian users are seeing app sizes, but more countries may be added to the list at a later date. As for why the change was made in the first place, Google has probably kept India's state of data connectivity in mind while making the change.

Although India has made huge strides in affordable data since 2016 with the rise of Reliance Jio, VoLTE and 4G LTE, data can still be expensive and limited in many areas of the country. Letting users know the size of an app right on the home screen itself is a move designed to increase convenience in markets where the data connectivity is not optimal.

Users can expect this feature to make its way to other developing markets in the future depending on the feedback that Google receives on the same.
