Xiaomi announced the global version of MIUI 9 on November 2 at an event in New Delhi, India, alongside the Redmi Y1. (Before the announcement, some users started receiving the update on the Mi 6, the Mi Mix 2, and the Mi Max 2.) On the same day, Xiaomi launched the MIUI 9 Beta Stable update for the Redmi Note 4, and shortly after, the ROM rolled out to all users. Now, Xiaomi is upgrading a few of the other flagships in its sprawling portfolio.
The Xiaomi devices in this batch of MIUI 9 Global updates include the Mi Max 2, the Mi 6, the first-generation Mi Mix, the Mi 5, and the Mi 5S Plus. At least some of those phones are getting not-yet-finalized nightly updates, which Xiaomi calls "Beta Stable". But the phone maker expects to upgrade all Beta Stable ROMs to finalized "Global Stable" versions in the coming weeks.
The MIUI 9 Global update features improved UI speed and performance on par with stock Android, according to Xiaomi, plus improved notification handling, split screen, a secure app vault, quick replies, and more localization features for markets such as India. It's based on Android Nougat — Xiaomi hasn't laid out its plans for Android Oreo update yet.
