Start KingRoot app and attempt to root. The app might tell you that its unable to perform the task, stopping at whatever percentage before 100%, but several power cycles later and a few attempts more will finally root the device.
Afterwards, I decided to remove KingRoot software with the following:

To run the replacement tool, you need to install a terminal emulator.
Yes, replace KingRoot with SuperSU.
I suspect that this tablet will not continue receiving any more official updates from HP, so I don't know if updates are broken after rooting.
I'll post evidence, as soon as the Slate 21 is not being used. :p
